Post 9/11 a sensual libertarian movement with a distinctively feminine
voice, emanating from Brooklyn and the Lower
East Side, driven by a cadre of women (female social entrepreneurs,
erotic event planners and sensual performance artiste's, a "sensual
libertarian network" of sorts) has ascended upon,
transformed and otherwise become part of the essential fabric of
Manhattan nightlife, society and culture.
Whether it is the art mimicking our culture or the art
itself an outgrowth of the cultural and political climate is
not so clear. Perhaps it’s a little of both. This "sensual
movement" celebrating girl power and girl love embodies the
choice rather than exploitation of women. It is also on some level leading
our society towards a healthy erosion of double standards by
creating a forum for women to celebrate their sexual freedom,
pleasure and status as sexual beings. It is not simply
about nudity, sex or hedonistic indulgence, although there is plenty
of that. As stated by, Palagia
of Onelegupnyc in reference to her erotic
themed events, "It would be nice [if the media] would hone in
on how these events transform relationships or marriages."
"I'd rather read about how a couple grew from attending one of
my parties versus where they had sex and with whom." See
Eros NY
The undercurrent is pragmatic, reality
& choice based rather than a morality play with a clientele that
is more Eyes Wide Shut than Bob,
Carol, Ted & Alice, without the moral dilemmas which perplexed Tom and Nicole
in Eyes
Wide Shut.
